Breast cancer in women is a serious disease and it is very important to pay attention to prevent breast cancer in the future. Regular screenings and mammograms are highly recommended for detecting breast cancer at its earliest stages. Performing a breast self-exam at home can also be an effective tool in identifying any potential abnormalities. In this blog, we will guide you through the steps of how to check for breast lumps at home, empowering you to take control of your breast health.

What is a Breast Self-Exam (BSE)?

A Breast Self-Exam, or BSE, is a simple yet important process that involves checking for any changes or abnormalities in your breasts. This self-examination can be done at home and should be performed regularly to detect any potential breast lumps or masses.

Why is a Brest Self Exam Important?

It is best to get checked early if there is even a slight abnormal change in the breasts. By regularly performing a breast self-exam, you become familiar with your breasts and can easily recognize any changes or unusual lumps. Detecting breast cancer at its earliest stages increases the chances of successful treatment and a positive outcome.

Step-by-Step Guide for a Breast Self-Exam

  • Choose the Right Time: Perform your breast self-exam at the same time each month, ideally a few days after your menstrual cycle ends. If you have reached menopause, choose a specific day every month. This consistency will help you notice any changes more accurately.
  • Stand in Front of a Mirror: Begin by examining your breasts visually. With your arms relaxed at your side, check for any changes in size, shape, or symmetry. Look for any changes in the skin, such as redness, dimpling, or puckering. Note any changes in your nipples, including inversion or discharge. It is important to remember that slight asymmetry is normal, but any significant differences should be thoroughly examined.
  • Raise Your Arms: Raise your arms above your head and carefully observe your breasts. Check any changes in shape or contour.
  • Perform the Lying Down Exam: Lie flat on your back and place a pillow under your shoulder on the side you are examining. Using the pads of your fingers, apply light pressure and move your fingertips in a circular motion from the outer edges toward the nipple. Try to cover the area under your armpit and breast. Repeat this process on the other side.
  • Perform the Upstanding Exam: Stand up and raise the arm on the side you are examining. Use the same circular motion with your fingers as you did in the lying-down exam. It is important to check all areas of the breast, including the upper portion and the area beneath the armpit. Repeat on the other side.
  • Examine Discharge: Squeeze your nipples gently to check for any abnormal discharge. If you notice any clear, bloody, or unusual discharge please consult your healthcare provider.

When to Seek Medical Attention?

The important thing to remember is that most breast lumps are not cancerous. However, if you notice any changes or abnormalities during your breast self-exam, it is crucial to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They can properly identify any potential issues and recommend appropriate diagnostic tests if necessary.
