Pain in the breasts or any other feeling in the breasts triggers a fear in women, and this fear is breast cancer. Then women ask themselves many questions, such as what breast cancer is, how it develops, how many types of breast cancer there are, and what are the symptoms of breast cancer. What is Breast Cancer?

Unfortunately, breast cancer is rapidly increasing in women. In a previous article, we saw that cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cells in the body, and their transformation into a tumor is called cancer growth. The main function of the breast is to produce milk from the cells it contains. These cells are connected to the nipple through tiny ducts in the breast.

However, when these cells grow uncontrollably and accumulate in these vessels, tumors form in them. This is called breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Symptoms and Signs

We know that the main symptom of breast cancer is the appearance of lumps in the breasts. But not every tumor is cancer. Also, there are different types of breast cancer that have different symptoms. You can recognize some symptoms of breast cancer as follows

  • A lump in the breast or underarm.
  • A difference or change in the size of the breasts is observed.
  • A dirty, bloody discharge from the nipples.
  • Sometimes the nipples become red.
  • Burns on the nipples.
  • Pain in or around the breasts.
  • Swelling in the breasts.
  • Changes in the skin of the breasts can be seen.
  • Stiffness appears under the breasts.

What Are The Risks of Breast Cancer?

Although the leading cause of breast cancer is not yet known, some of the following may be.

  • In general, women are more likely to develop breast cancer after age 55.
  • Heredity. If someone in the family has breast cancer, cancer may develop.
  • Girls who menstruate before age 12 have a higher risk of developing breast cancer.
  • BRCA1, BRCA2, and BRCA3 are breast cancer genes. Mutation of these two genes increases the risk of developing breast cancer.
  • Sometimes, radiation treatment increases the risk of breast cancer.
  • Women who take hormone therapy may increase their risk of breast cancer.
  • Drinking alcohol may increase the risk of breast cancer.
  • Women who are overweight increase their risk of breast cancer.

What Tests are Done to Diagnose Breast Cancer?

  • Mammogram: A mammogram is commonly used to detect changes or abnormal growths in your breast using special X-rays.
  • Ultrasonography: Ultrasonography uses sound waves to make pictures of the cells inside the breast. It is used to detect lumps or abnormalities in the breast.
  • Biopsy: A Biopsy involves sending some samples of body tissue to a laboratory for examination under a microscope.

How Is Breast Cancer Treated?

Treatment for breast cancer depends on how large the tumor is and how far the cancer has spread. The doctor may suggest some of the following treatments, depending on the need

  • Breast cancer surgery
  • Chemotherapy for breast cancer
  • Radiation therapy for breast cancer
  • Hormone therapy for breast cancer
  • Immunotherapy for breast cancer
  • Drug therapy

How to Avoid Breast Cancer?

We have seen what breast cancer is and its symptoms and causes, but it is very important to be careful not to get it. Let us see what the best way is to prevent breast cancer.

  • Do not gain too much weight. Lose weight to maintain your health.
  • Exercise is a must to become more active.
  • It is best to avoid smoking and alcohol.
  • Consult an expert before taking birth control pills, if possible.
  • If you want to take hormone replacement therapy, please also ask your doctor about the risks.
  • Ask your doctor about your family’s history of cancer.
  • Breastfeeding plays an essential role in breast cancer prevention.
  • Mammography is recommended every year starting at the age of 40 to avoid complications.
  • From the age of 20, it is best to have regular clinical breast exams.
